Abstract: This study traces the history and the general characteristics in the Journal of Information Science Theory and Practice
(JISTaP) published by KISTI, an international open access journal in South Korea, based on the experiences as an EIC of it
from its initiation including the feasibility study about it. It also focuses on the major points to be considered when
considering the domestic national journals into international ones in the regard that it has been successfully have done
that kind of project well. It also suggests many ongoing challenges presented by a changing new publishing environment.
Because there are much more obstacles and difficulties in managing international journal publishing than domestic ones,
we should consider much more related problems and conditions many of which are included in this article based on
more than 10 years’ practical experiences. Therefore, this presentation will be helpful not only for the publishers and
related staff which publishing or considering the transformation of domestic journals into international ones but also for
the researchers contributing to the journals.
