This paper reviews the literature on the problem of information overload with particular reference to information systems executives use in their enterprises. The literature reveals that although the problem of information overload has existed for many years, in recent centuries the problem has become more widely recognised and experienced by many executives. The perceptions and the actual effects of information overload have been given rise because of the rapid advances made in information and communication technology in many enterprises. Although there is an abundance of information available in information systems, it is often difficult to obtain good information when it is needed for decision making by executives. There are various solutions put forward to mitigate information overload in personal, information, tasks and processes, orgnisational and information technology perspectives. This article reviews literature on information overload in information systems perspective since many executives in one way or the order depend on information systems to obtain good information for decision making. The final section proposes some strategies to mitigate the problem of information overload when executives have no other choice but to use information systems to obtain good information for decision making.
