Project MediHelp is a Question Answering System which is available for the layman to address his day to day medical curiosity and information regarding hundreds of ailments and remedies. The project aims at giving the users a concise summary of responses to their queries related to diseases, symptoms or any general information that is present in the database relevant to the query of the user. The user enters the query wherein there are three options available to him whether to enter a disease, symptom or ask for general information. There onwards, the query is analysed by the system and then it removes stop words. Further, the keywords are tagged and the question is classified into different categories. Accordingly, different answers are extracted using keyword matching for the same query using different databases. This article identifies Disease Outbreak Prediction (DOP) as one application context of Big Data and suggests a method to solve it using Apache Storm Architecture. According to WHO, if excess number of people in a particular country is effected by same disease then it is considered to be a Disease Outburst Situation. If we correctly identify an outburst, then we could prevent progressive spread of the disease. Storm is chosen because it is fast, reliable and fault tolerant. The paper presents a study conducted among teachers and learners of the Open University of Sri Lanka to construct a glossary terminology management system (GMS) as a learner supporting service for the Open & Distance learners (ODL) of social sciences who learn online. The designer had surveyed the user requirements before designing the GMS and existing online GMSs were also studied and evaluated. A Free and Open Source software application ‘Glossword’ was selected for the purpose. The system features were also studied and experimented before constructing the term base. Openness of such systems benefits worldwide users rather than building and rebuilding of same terms for similar purposes and reiterating the same effort for similar tasks. Instead, any course builder, material writer, compiler etc. can insert a common subject specific GSM link in online study materials, online courses, webographies, assignments etc. At the present the GSM is designed only for the courses in Social Sciences offered by the Faculty of Humanities & social Sciences, however the system can be adopted by the other courses in both online and conventional modes.
